The Coopers' five orphaned wombats are among the few lucky creatures to emerge unscathed from the fire-ravaged Toolangi forest.

They were piled with Diana and Tim Cooper, children Kitt, 13, and Isabella, 11, two elderly neighbours and the pet dog into the family car minutes before the fire front hit on Black Saturday.

One week later the Coopers and their wombats returned to their house - a wooden house surrounded by tan bark. Inexplicably it survived, while neighbours' houses around theirs fell. The wombats are living inside in cages until a new pen is built outside on the black ground.
